Okay all you technoid fanatics. Upstate NY. Back in the mid 1990s we
went geothermal with a ground-source heat pump. It probably paid for
itself (in the vicinity of $10k including the cost of the ground loop
piping) in five years.

Fast forward a score years or so and it was decided to update the unit.
Different vendor, Got rebates and what not knocked that down to about $4k.

Now I'm thinking, if NYSEG's lines go down in winter, I could get cold.
Backup generator (propane). But wait! Why not solar. I've got a south
facing slope perfect for solar panels.

And why just for emergency backup???

Asked around, asked the outfit that put in the latest heat pump.

Turns out "lots of people" are going that route. Got calls in for solar
panels. We shall see, but I may have seen the last of NYSEG.

Now, no cell service here. If I only had a way to get free of Verizon's
land line service.

I guess I'll have to research satellite. I have Dish network and
Wildblue.net for internet. Hmmmmmmm.
