Thanks everyone. That helps.
First, a clarification request: Jenny, am I right to assume that the conference organizer or a conference sponsor/exhibitor has commissioned you to write content for them? Or are you simply on assignment from an independent publication?
It sounds like the former, but I wanted to be clear.

Assuming the former:

This is why I like flat-rate billing. I add up my hourly rate for travel time, attendance time, interview/research/review time, combine that with what it would normally cost to write the individual item(s), and synthesize all of that into a flat rate – not
including actual costs (mileage/travel fare, parking, lodging if applicable, per diem, etc.) or additional work or time spent not in the original scope (billed separately under a three-figure hourly rate).

Assuming the latter:

Either the pub is paying for you to cover the conference or they aren’t. I haven’t had an event-covering gig where a pub paid for both the individual articles AND for my time (not to mention costs). If you can get it, more power to you, but seems like a tough
sell (especially since you’ve already negotiated what the individual articles would cost).

I've been contacted about covering an out-of-state event that should result in about 4 articles, for which I'd be paid individually. Just wondering, though, if anyone has an idea about what is a fair price to charge for actually attending the
event for a day or day and a half, plus time spent on travel, which would add up to about a day round trip in and of itself? I don't usually do this so I'm not up to snuff on tihs. Thanks for any thoughts on this!
