One use for WhatsApp is, if your regular texting app requires cell service 
for texting (i.e., won't work on WiFi, which appears to be the case for my 
and SO's AT&T-using smartphones).  The other user(s) will also have to 
be using WhatsApp.

For all I know (which ain't much), there are other texting apps that will 
talk to multiple texting apps/clients. And likewise, for all I know, 
AT&T's messaging will work over WiFi, if I fix some setting.
