America's version of Christmas is as much a product of the New Deal as
anything else. FDR moved Thanksgiving back a week to give us an extra week
of Christmas shopping, and "Christmas stories" like Rudolph the Reindeer
were all written during the 1930s to encourage consumer Christmas shopping.
(Rudolph was written for Montgomery Ward.)

A few centuries ago, Christmas was a sort of "Backwards Day" holiday, when
peasants were encouraged to go to the master's house, and he'd be obligated
to feed you and ply you with drink. I think Scrooge prefers things this
way.
