Years ago on BIX, there was a running conversation that the proper name
for THAT appliance was "dish-rinser".  Part of the more recent problems
has been the reformulation of dishwasher soap to remove certain
chemicals that actually did some of the work -- with those gone, the
appliance does a poorer job.

My ex-wife's family abhorred the appliance.  Carla and bonded over the
sink as we hand-washed the dinnerware for a party of 16 people on
several occasions.  When she and I bought a house, and refurbed the
kitchen, we did find a dishwasher that would actually wash the china,
although we pre-brushed everything as we loaded.  Pots and pans were
still hand-washed, and machine-rinsed.
