The problem isn't Linux, it's that no developers of the software and
capabilities you need are willing to publish their work in the FOSS
environment. The Linux community has fallen far behind the Mac/Windows
environment in providing the tools.
The basic capabilities are there, including using GPUs where appropriate
-- but the programs have to be aware they are there, and use them.
Ditto games for Linux, which is still in its infancy.
Computer use is more than just the operating system. Given the current
state of the software art, you are completely justified in avoiding the
Linux platform in the near term.
If I were doing typography again, I would go Macintosh. I was a real
lover of Adobe Illustrator and PageMaker on the Mac. But I don't do
that any more.
