Whereas the fact is that an extrovert takes energy from outside - crowds
energize them. An introvert is typically enervated by mobs. I know at
conferences I sometimes have to retreat to the bathroom for a few minutes of
silence.

The idea that everyone is either an extrovert or introvert is an
over-simplification. The majority of people have a scale of behavior and can
be both, depending on mood and circumstances.
However, many people like to identify as introverts because that implies
that they are sensitive and thoughtful. Conversely, other types of people
call themselves extroverts, thinking it suggests confidence and control.
