There are specialized robots all over the place that perform this sort
of operation.  For example, inn some TV stations, robots will pick,
insert, and put back videotape cassettes.  Ditto large data storage systems.

Perhaps the science fiction writers were thinking about robots replacing
human pickers without modifying the warehouse in any way.
