Citrix presented an event in Scotland for a few analysts they liked working with. I brought my wife and one of my step-daughters. They went out and toured while I was in meetings. Citrix made time in the conference schedule so people could go and see some of the countryside. We seen to see the William Wallace Memorial. As we were coming back to the busses, we saw video of planes striking the towers. The Citrix folks did their best to get the US-based analysts home.
Since I had my wife and step-daughter with me, I had to take on the role of getting us home. We ended up renting a car and driving from Scotland to several different airports in the UK. Each time, a flight was scheduled, we got seats, we went to the airport and found that the flights had been canceled. We ended up going from hotel to hotel, from airport to airport for about 2 weeks before we finally ended up in Atlanta.
The everyday folks in the UK were wonderful. Many of them commented that they remembered the bombings from WW II and tried to help us. One local pharmacy even sent someone to London to pick up a replacement for my wife’s heart medicine (the brand she was taking wasn’t sold in the UK).
Watching everything from the UK gave us a unique perspective.
