I had the same problem with a government website recently. Turned out it
wanted all numbers, with no spaces or hyphens or parentheses. NOT intuitive
for a phone number. I agree - don't just throw a stupid error, offer info so
we can fix it! Or better yet, tell us the required format up front.

Why, in the phone # fields, does the format-error message

    The ... Phone field is in an invalid format.

not include what the frigging correct format is?

Yeah, not hard to guess. But if the web site knows what the right answer is,
why not share, hmmph.
