Back when I was working on newspaper typesetting software, one rule for
the composition system was to, at input, convert multiple space codes to
a single spaceband. (It was a customer option to then substitute a
spaceband after a period, colon, or semicolon to a different element
such as en space or em space.)
So the single- versus double-space argument at the end of the sentence
would become moot.
