Not hard to join, though it might limit your employment. Same reason most magazines call their writers either editors or contributors – they’d have to pay them more if they called them writers, since writers have a union.

No, I only got day rates when I freelanced as an extra that one time. And it wasn't even SAG rates, because I'm not in the union. <sigh>

If anyone wants to know what I'm doing here at The Verge, among other things (like learning the software, getting used to its editing methods, and waiting to find out if I'll ever have a freelance budget and if so, how much), I'm being volunteered to be a voice on the company's science-fiction podcast. And yes, I play a really nasty old lady.
