I’ve had similar issues, but nothing so egregious.*
Options for using it as a sample include:
1) Put it on your website or other web presence, but with their opening instead of yours. At the end, in italics, say, “A version of this article originally appeared at [Site/Link].”
2) When asked for samples, include it but give them the disclaimer.
3) Sigh and move on.
* I did once experience something like this, but it wasn’t for pay.
My freshman year of college, I joined the school newspaper. For my first assignment, they gave me a tidy story involving student-government bureaucracy. The powers that be loved the story. The editor-in-chief personally gave me an atta-boy and offered me another assignment (about what, I can’t remember). It involved much more research and no quotes. I busted my ass to get it in by deadline – literally running all the way from my dorm to the newspaper office in a windy rainstorm.
When they ran it, every point was rearranged and graf rewritten so that pretty much not a single word of it was mine. I’m not THAT bad a writer.
So I said screw this. After all, it was a volunteer/extracurricular thing – not a job.
When the EIC offered me another assignment, I begged off and told him exactly why.
SJVN’s right. At least when an editor does that these days, I get paid.
Joe

Nope.
Cash the check and move on.
