Remember Heathkit of Benton Harbor, MI? When they put together a new
kit, they would have someone not versed in electronics try to put it
together. When they finished running through the secretarial pool and
the janitors, they have to find new people on the outside.
When I created a modem testing product to run on PCs, I used the same
technique to verify that the manual was as clear as it could be to
newbies. (And to experienced people, too -- you can go too far in
simplification.) The result is that tech supports calls were minimal
regarding installation.
1. Developers are bad at interface design.
2. Consultants are bad at interface design.
3. Marketing people can make a stab at it by asking perspective customers.
4. Field Service/Technical Support can provide all kinds of pointers to
bad UI design after the product is launched.
