Well, that depends on the library -- and the kid-and-parent book 
management. ~5+ years ago, my grandkids and their mom, for example,
all racked up $50-100 fines through losing track of books, bringing them 
in way late, or just giving up. Some items turned up during a move, and 
were returned; some fines were simply paid; and we did some negotiating 
and bargaining (as with yard sales, I'd taught my granddaughter "look 
sad").
