My SO's daughter and her two kids lived in our basement\\\\\\\\\lower 
level for six years, they've been not-there [1] for about four years now.

I'm not sure if that counts as "once removed."

Once they moved out, I go to refer to us as "grandparents without 
boarders."

[1] They'd originally moved elsewhere in town, but last spring, bought a 
house slightly west of Worcester (which is not the title of a rediscovered 
John Steinbeck novel), so our grandson has been living with us, for his 
senior year of high school.
