I lost my favorite journalism professor, Dick Schwarzlose, the same way at
about the same age, 60. He was on a bicycle. Former Atlanta Mayor Maynard
Jackson, whose name is now on the Airport, had the same thing happen to
him, on a plane. Similar age.

Also lost one of my best friends, Russell Shaw. That was in 2008. He was on
the beat, and had he lived longer would likely have been invited to join
this crew long before I was.

Russell had untreated diabetes, I later learned. Schwarzlose's death led me
to investigate what's now called the "Internet of Things," which I called
"the world of Always-On." I always thought that tracking heart beat
irregularities could be a "killer app."

I have mentioned here before that I nearly died at age 45, because I didn't
know how about my high cholesterol or hypertension.

There remains much we don't know about how heart attacks can be triggered.
