LBJ taught history at Sam Houston High School. (He was the head of the history department, too.)
Ruth Bader-Ginsburg taught history in high school -- and also taught law school.
Which other American political leaders were previously classroom teachers (or college professors)?
To my mind, when you've spent time teaching, your skills at empathy are further developed. LBJ admitted
that his time as a teacher influenced a lot of his thinking later in life.
