You're spot on, Alfred. Probably because of the five years I spent in 
Canada, I absolutely refuse to use the word "Americans" to refer 
specifically to U.S. folks, for the same reason that you mention. 
Americans from other countries in the Americas will often notice this 
and be appreciative, and if they don't notice it'll be because you 
haven't offended, as they think they're just as American as we are.
