Fifty year ago, when you talked about helping poor people, it was okay to say: "Helping poor people."
Then everyone came to understand that this phrasing was demeaning -- so people started saying:
"Helping underserved communities."
At a conference last weekend, I learned of a better phrasing, which I'll be using.
"Helping underestimated communities."
It's not that these communities are poor or that they underserved -- it's that they are underestimated.
That affords them the dignity they deserve.
