In my case, marketing has no say on my stories. That's important  
because I can't stand to write marketing materials. I call them as I  
see them no matter what publication or company I'm writing for.

I've been combining this kind of work with my straight journalism work  
for over a decade now and my publishers over that time--which is  
pretty much every technology publication out there--are perfectly  
happy with me.
