I STRONGLY disagree with using a free theme, unless you use one of the ones
that come with the WordPress install. Free themes have been HUGE security
problems, often wind up with malware that's delivered to your visitors,
etc. At this point, only use a paid theme from a well-respected and proven
supplier or one that is distributed as part of the WordPress installation.
Anything else, unless you're very well aware of what your theme is doing,
can be seriously problematic.

But, that said, the base WordPress themes that come with WordPress are
pretty nice.
