[Ipg-smz] Facebook to hire ex-felons?

I agree totally. In days of yore we had the “frontier” where people could go west to remake themselves after running afoul of society in the east … often with success. Now we live in a zero tolerance world while simultaneously expanding greatly the range of offenses that are deemed felonies.

Then add these to the “Ham Sandwich Nation” we’ve created and allow to continue (See, “Ham Sandwich Nation: Due Process When Everything is a Crime,” Glenn Reynolds, available at https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2203713) and it’s a recipe for ultimate discontentment, distrust in the law and distrust in the process of justice.

We have made a felony conviction a life sentence.

I don't know why we don't see that as a problem.

I have a great-nephew. He joined the army. He got a duplicitous girlfriend. She left her hyperactive toddler with him. He dropped the kid. The kid died.

My great-nephew was sentenced, at age 19, to 15 years hard time.

He'll neve have a life. He might as well be dead.

And this happens, routinely, to thousands of people, every day.

An incredibly high percentage of these people are African American.

Most of my neighborfs are African American.

Lifetime felonies are something that strike me personally. They make me angry. They're also an economic waste. We're treating people in this country the way we treat the Earth. We're trashing them.
