[Ipg-smz] We need an alternative to our existing lists

Lifehacker loves groups.io -- and they explain why.

That's some very fine journalism there.

Howard, if you are up for it, and given that a lot of people do not like Facebook, I would be happy to run a Tech Journos FB group, if people wanted to opt in to it. I don't want to fork from IPG, since I am an officer, but I can see some people wanting to do stuff on there.

Yes, I agree. There's a lot of volume, a lot of us already use facebook , and then we can compartmentalize the discussions within a single post.

FWIW, and given the fantastic volume of messages back and forth about this issue, I concur with Jason. A closed group is a great solution that requires little administration or support.

Since we already have a FB fan page, adding a group to it is pretty easy. I can set it up if you give me mod/admin on it.

I currently run a Facebook group with nearly 2000 members in it, the admin controls are pretty easy. If it is private/secret the overhead will be minimal.

Private/Secret Facebook Group. Or Google Groups. Facebook group would be easier to deal with I think.

After months of fiddling with the list software, mail server, and
settings, I'm about to give up on our current platform. For reasons I
have not been able to pin down, some members keep getting locked out of
one or more lists.

Indeed, SMZ, for some reason, seems to be the list that has the least
amount of trouble, so I'm posting this message to it, rather than ipg-
l, which is its more natural home.

I still believe a mailing list is the best way to go, it's just that
our current setup is Not doing the job.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to replace it, I'd love to hear
them. I have some ideas of my own, but I'd like to hear from you.
