If you want to compete with something like Facebook, the word the VCs are
looking for is niche.
I don't know how well Alignable will do, but I do know they got funding.
They're competing with LinkedIn and Facebook based on corporate names. You
recommend me, I recommend you, that kind of thing.
This can, when done correctly, organize a local industry or interest. Then
all you need do is advocate for that interest and you've got journalism.
