1) While at BBN, we had the opportunity to contribute a cover to
TELECOMMUNICATIONS magazine (or maybe it was TP+T). I finessed
comissioning original art from sf/f artist Hannah Shapero (who I later got
to do art for my Internet book and for INTERNET WORLD magazine). (1)
Figuring out a price was tricky. I consulted BBN's own art department;
Hannah and I agreed on $1,000... and when she was done, I told her to
invoice for $2,000 (which is what I'd told my boss it would be -- but,
given what she was presumably getting for her SF/F art, I didn't want to
make her nervous while she was working). I didn't quite hear her fall off
her chair, several hundred miles away, but almost.
2) INTERNET WORLD magazine issue #1. Alan Meckler found a stock image of
the ends of a fiber-optic bundle, with sparkly rainbow colors coming out
of it or whatever. Ah well. I've seen that image used a bunch of times
since then, here and there. Above the image, he wrote "50 Internet Tips."
"Alan," said I, "there's no such article in the issue." "I'm sure there
are that many tips in the issue," he told me.

(1) Yes, I have all the originals. Including the BBN one, which followed
me home one day...
