I like Dan's example of RJR Nabisco.

There have been a LOT of examples through history of small, aggressive
companies "buying up".  Ones that come to mind quickly are Kmart's
acquisition of Sears, Time Warner's of AOL, nearly everything that Texas
Air Corporation notoriously did during its lifetime, a lot of
*conglomeration* in the 1960s (ITT, Avco, ...), Tata Steel's purchase of
Corus, ...
