The counter is simple, as outlined by several below. While they are
evaluating you, you are also evaluating them. During the evaluation period,
they are free to talk to other candidates and you are free to work with
current clients. If they do see that as reasonable, wave bye-bye with
whatever finger raised you feel appropriate.
