[Ipg-smz] Off the Grid

Another thing that makes a big difference is the price per KW of electricity. Last time I looked into it, prices varied by more than a factor of 10 from cheapest to most expensive, so time to amortize a solar array can vary from less than a year to more than five. Local utilities can also play a role – my city’s local power utility is trying to get a proposal through the city council to eliminate the credit for power returned to the system as well as charging a fee for connecting to the grid. This is not in the least to any customer’s benefit, it’s solely to improve profits for the utility.

Speaking of solar power, earlier this year I saw at CostCo "solar storage battery banks." I don't know the price and don't remember the vendor, but more generally, this would probably help smooth out the low-sun periods.

(Or, I suppose, you could buy/build a water tank and pump water uphill to store it that way.)

And just in case anyone is interested, Daniel's CostCo suggestion led me down interesting Google paths. Such as:

How much does an average 10kW solar system cost? In the US, an average 10kW solar system costs between $2.90 and $3.30 per watt. That comes out to an initial price tag of $29-33 k before the 30 percent solar tax credit. In some areas, additional state or utility based rebates and credits may reduce the price even more.
