They’re not as bad as they used to be – the programs can open a lot of different formats now. Many years ago, I had an argument with the Word product manager, who could not comprehend why anyone would need to work with anything but the old  binary .doc format. WordPerfect, OTOH, could use well over a dozen file format at the time. And I soooo miss Reveal Codes!

Throughout the years, the Microsoft Office group has steadfastly refused to adequately open up its data formats, nor embrace other formats.
